Usually when a game comes out that features Mario taking the court, there's praise across the board towards Nintendo for how well they can create a fun atmosphere in any situation around their wacky characters. However, their latest sports game, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash for the Wii U, isn't quite receiving all that much love.

The game currently has a 61 out of 100 Metascore based on 34 critical reviews. Much like the recent release of Star Wars Battlefront, reviewers are criticizing the lack of value the game has for its asking price and questioning how long the game can be played before players grow weary.

Here's what the critics are saying:

GamingTrend - 75 out of 100
"Nintendo’s best competitive sports title is just as thrilling as ever, but feels a little too familiar and light on content."

Nintendo Enthusiast - 60 out of 100
"The game is a hollow corpse when held up against the franchise’s history."

Yahoo! Games - 60 out of 100
"Despite the glitzy visuals, it’s a predictable serve that lands well inside the line, rather than a decisive, smashing ace."

GameTrailers - 57 out of 100
"The shallow mechanics quickly grow tiresome, and this is further emphasized by the lack of game modes and creativity that we’d expect from a Mario sports game."

Destructoid - 55 out of 100
"You're better off just playing any other previous game in the series, which is particularly easy to do since the first game is on the Wii U Virtual Console for just 10 bucks."

IGN - 48 out of 100
"Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is a bare-bones, lackluster addition to Mario's sporting adventures."

NintendoWorldReport - 35 out of 100
"While the game can be decent in passing, it’s a horrible value when you stop and think about it. There is just one stadium, limited online options, and less features than the previous two entries."

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash releases Friday, November 20th. Have the recent reviews convinced you to take a pass on Mario's latest adventure? Let us know below!
