Developers Now Receiving Oculus Rift Consumer Editions Ahead Of Retail Launch

Those special devkit versions of the Oculus Rift headgear are nice and all but it's not what we, the consumer, will be looking stupid in as we prance around in our magical virtual worlds. Finally the actual consumer models are being shipped to developers.

These editions are accompanied by the Oculus SDK 1.0 and are primarily targeting those who are looking to exploit their games as launch titles for Oculus Rift early next year. “If you’re shipping a Rift title in Q1, you’ll need early access to Rift hardware and new platform features to finalize your game or application. The Rift SDK 1.0 and runtime include features tied to the consumer product, so we’ve currently limited the release to developers putting final touches on launch titles,” said the VR tech company.

They stress this is only for those close to release and titles that'll be launching later can make do with the current DK2 headsets and 0.8 SDK. The (hopeful) VR revolution is almost here as the big projects near launch.

Oculus Rift releases in Q1 2016.
