Sony To Power Up Robotech Franchise

Fans of 80’s sci-fi anime Robotech, rejoice! Or rather, remain cautiously optimistic!

Sony Pictures are the latest studio to turn their hands to the long-gestating project - which spans animated series, movies, RPGs, comics, novels, and some hella cool toys - with an eye to molding the much-loved series into a veritable alien smashing franchise.

Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton (300) will produce while Michael Gordon (GI Joe: Rise of Cobra), is writing the project, which will be overseen by the studio's Doug Belgrad, Michael De Luca and Matthew Milam.

The plot sees the people of Earth developing giant transforming mechanical suits after discovering a crashed alien spaceship in the South Pacific. In this iteration, the fate of the human race lies in the hands of a pair of young, possible reckless and, yes, rebellious pilots.

No, it’s not Pacific Rim but it’s going to have to differentiate itself from franchises like that and Transformers in order to capture audience’s attention but, if your inner ten-year old isn’t buzzing around the room at the prospect of seeing giant planes with legs, armed with massive guns, fighting aliens then, frankly, you may be dead.

"With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless," said Sony Production President Michael De Luca while possibly rubbing his hands in glee at the fact Warner Bros. seemingly passed on what sounds like a sure-fire hit.

There not the only ones to have toyed with donning mechanical suits and stomping over the box office: Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man), Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back), and Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind), to name a few have all be connected to the project.

While there is no timeline in place just yet, it’ll be interesting to see this develop. If only to see if it actually makes it to the screen this time.
