Matt And Trey Explain Changes With South Park: The Fractured But Whole

A behind-the-scenes video has been released by South Park Studios and Ubisoft for the upcoming sequel South Park: The Fractured But Whole.

The creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, show their genius in revolutionising the RPG that perfectly captures the 'crappy look and feel' of the TV series. The Fractured But Whole apparently takes place the day after The Stick of Truth ended, where the boys swap fantasy for super heroes.

The New Kid, Sir Douchebag

It's an excellent excuse for why you're 'nobody again' like in the original as the new kid who arrived in town. The boys are playing super heroes and you have never played as a super hero before, so despite becoming a big shot in The Stick of Truth you're back to being no one, and so free to shape your new powers.

You can also for the first time choose to play as a girl in South Park, and the boys have been given unique responses to say should you choose this. Why do they react? Well, you're a girl playing with the boys as they play super heroes... and this is South Park.

The story in The Fractured But Whole focuses on another big split among the boys where Cartmen, aka The Coon, wants them to make a billion dollars with their super hero movie franchise. The trouble starts when not everyone agrees with the plan and they split into two rival super hero franchises, alluding to Marvel and DC Comics.

Matt and Trey credit the likes of PewDiePie and other public streamers for giving them such a rich vein of direct feedback from the audience. It's how a lot of changes have been made in the sequel as they filter how what's 'lame' and what's awesome-o.

Tactical Changes, Time Altering Farts

The biggest changes to the tactical RPG, aside from the change from fantasy to super heroes, is the battle system. The original South Park game had a quite static battle system where each took their turns in fixed positions with button mashing.

Now the combat has been overhauled to better reflect the super hero powers the boys have and characters can now be re-positioned during fights and take advantage of cover and environmental hazards. You can also knock about characters and therefore 'gang up' on particularly tough enemies.

You character had some rather powerful fart abilities in The Stick of Truth, and they do return in The Fractured But Whole. This title seems to point to both the split amongst the boys but also your new ability to 'manipulate time' with your farts, which plays directly into the new combat system.

Matt and Trey also say the original sequel title was The Butthole of Time but retailers wouldn't have any of that kind of potty-mouth, so they played around a little more with the wording and ended up with the arguably better and funnier The Fractured But Whole.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole releases on PC, Xbox One and PS4 December 6th.
