The Birds: Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes Hires Director

You thought it was dead. You thought it couldn’t happen again. That we’d learned our lesson. That history had made examples of the likes of Gus Van Sant, Boris Sagel, and Jeff Bleckner but no. Once again, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes are pressing ahead with a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds.

The project had been on the back-burner but, it turns out, it’s now being actively pursued with Dutch director Diederik Van Rooijen – making his English language debut after enjoying success in his native land with films such as Taped – being thrown to the lions/lined up to direct it.

There’s little know about the project at the moment but, it’s safe to say, it’ll take a hell of a lot of convincing comment to talk people around to the idea of Michael Bay playing around with the classics – he may take our Turtles, he may take our Transformers but he’ll never take our classics!

A classic from Hitchcock’s latter day films and as close to an out and out horror film as he ever made, it has however, already spawned a sequel in 1994’s TV Movie, The Birds II: Land’s End directed by horror sequel specialist Rick Rosenthal, under the industry pseudonym for creative differences Alan Smithee. Rosenthal also directed Halloween II.
