Star Trek Beyond: Idris Elba Teases Villain Role

Star Trek Beyond is busy filming behind closed doors – that’s the problem with films set in space or on board spaceships, there’s very little location filming to snoop on – and so far, there have been very few spoilers.

What we do know is that the next film in the franchise is being directed by Justin Lin from a script by Scotty himself Simon Pegg and Doug Jung with Idris Elba joining the cast – which includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana - as the films villain.

And now – in the scarcity of new information – Elba has been teasing his role to MTV.

Speaking of the script, he said: “Simon and the team have written a very interesting, complex journey for my character. You've never seen me play a character like this".

Elaborating a little further, he added: “I think Star Trek has prided themselves as being quite classic when it comes to villains. He’s a guy who wants to end the world, there’s no doubt about that. But in this version of the film, there’s a slightly different twist to that", Elba said.

And as for the broader film, "it’s quite an interesting journey, which I think is groundbreaking for the franchise. But, it still keeps with the ’classic bad guy is a classic bad guy’ tone".

Star Trek Beyond is set for release on July 22nd 2016.
