A New York City overrun by a deadly pathogen with surviving clutches of civilians, emergency personnel and merciless opportunists is Tom Clancy's The Division, and Ubisoft want it as a film.

Variety reports that Ubisoft is busy wrangling up a writer to take on the job of adapting the online video game for the silver screen. Apparently Jake Gyllenhaal is already said to be attached to the project both as a star and a producer. This comes as Assassin's Creed takes the red carpet this year starring Michael Fassbender.

The Division centers on a special government contingency that entrusts select agents of the US to exercise special authority to bring back law and order at virtually any cost. Naturally a bioweapon ravaging urban population centers is a good time to activate these Division agents. The video game has us leading the charge as part of the 'second wave'.

Ubisoft has made it no secret about their plans to get into the movie-making business, and there's a quiet optimism among fans that Assassin's Creed could prove they have the chops to take their games to cinema.

Assassin's Creed will be in cinema December 21st in the US, and the UK December 26th.
