Space sim Star Citizen from Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts has just proven its star-studded credentials by unveiling the impressive cast the studio has assembled for the single-player Squadron 42 campaign.

Thrust into the spotlight as the headliner is Gary Oldman playing Admiral Ernest Bishop who leads the charge against the savage invasion endangering UEE colony worlds. The opening cinematic has been released that shows Bishop delivering a fiery speech in the senate chamber.

A Wing Commander favourite, Mark Hamill, is also returning to Chris Roberts' set though we don't yet know what role Master Skywalker will be playing. Only Oldman's casting as the Admiral has been officially announced so far however Gillian Anderson will be playing the Admiral's daughter. Motion capture legend Andy Serkis is also suited up and zipping about the cast.

We also have Mark Strong, Sophie Wu, Sandi Gardiner, Craig Fairbrass, Liam Cunningham, Ben Mendelsohn, Ian Duncun, Jack Huston, John Rhys-Davies, Rhona Mitra, Gemma Whelan and Harry Treadaway.

Getting together such a stellar cast was part of the stretch goals for Star Citizen which promised to twist enough arms at $5 million to get at least one Wing Commander veteran into the mix, which was almost certainly Hamil. However at the $29 million milestone the studio promised to significantly expand Squadron 42's campaign and make it "a true spiritual successor to Wing Commander!"

Star Citizen's Squadron 42 campaign will be releasing in 2016.

Check out the opening Bishop Senate Speech cinematic and the behind-the-scenes peak at the filming.
