Could Sandman Go Into Production Next Year?

Adapting The Sandman is a difficult, unenviable task – it’s been slow progress but writer and producer David S. Goyer has given Collider an update on whether The Sandman will bring us a dream movie.

Since it was revealed in 2013 that there was a new team on board consisting of Joseph Gordon-Levitt who is producing the film, and he's still running favourite to take the lead role, and to possibly direct, along with Goyer as a writer/producer and Jack Thorne penning the script, there’s been very little progress.

Now Goyer has a reason why progress has taken so long: “We’re just about to do a new draft. All of the Vertigo properties ported over to New Line a few months ago. There was a decision from the higher-ups that New Line would focus on the Vertigo properties and Warner Bros would focus on the DC properties. So we’re just starting a re-write with a really fantastic writer that fans of your site will enjoy that’s coming aboard, but I can’t quite announce it yet".

So it sounds like Jack Thorne might be done on Sandman.

Speaking further about the new logistics of Vertigos move to New Line, Goyer added: “I think that the Vertigo properties are a bit more quirky and off-centre than kind of the mainstream superhero stuff at Warners. But I understand the decision because we’re not having to fight for release dates with the Vertigo stuff like we would have been having to do over at Warner Bros. But I feel confident that film will go into production hopefully next year".
