Alicia Vikander Cast As Lara Croft In Rebooted Tomb Raider Movie

The leading lady of the Croft manor has been chosen as Alicia Vikander. She will be taking the role of Lara Croft in the movie reboot for Tomb Raider, based off the new games.

Since Tomb Raider has been enjoying massive success recently as the video game series rebooted and gave us a younger and inexperienced adventurer, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood got their paws on it.

Previously Angelina Jolie played as Lara Croft but those movies represented the original arc of Tomb Raider, and that's something that Crystal Dynamics has been distancing itself as they reinvent Lara as someone far more vulnerable, but who we see emerge as the icon fans know her as. There are plenty of screams and bone fractures along the way.

Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) was believed to be a favourite for the role but instead Vikander has been given the nod, and she has quite the resume which includes an Oscar for The Danish Girl. Vikander is also in the soon to released Jason Bourne.

Now that the top spot has been filled for the new Tomb Raider, which is in pre-production, we can finally start to see the latest film project move forward. It will be based off Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider from 2013 where she's shipwrecked on a Japanese island.

Things start out (in the game) as your more usual shipwrecked drama but soon enough things get a lot more complicated as something appears to be keeping people on the island. Survivors have been struggling to live day-to-day and are revealed as part of a cult.

Whether the movie reflects all of the game, which centres on the lost kingdom of Yamatai, remains to be seen but the released plot summary sounds awfully similar.

"Following the origins of a young Lara Croft on her first archaeological expedition she must use her strength and harness her skills in order to survive a crazed Island cult and unlock mythological secrets surrounding her mysterious whereabouts."

Rhianna Pratchett wrote the script for the 2013 video game but doesn't appear involved in the movie project. Camilla Luddington played the role of Lara in the recent Tomb Raider releases with her virtual counterpart made to resemble her a little more.

Crystal Dynamics' follow-up Rise of the Tomb Raider released last year to equal praise for keeping Lara on her toes. Should this movie reboot do well a sequel is inevitable.
