Unfortunately, The Ratchet & Clank Movie Is Getting Slammed By Critics

Coming out earlier this month with a strong performance on the gaming side of entertainment, PlayStation heroes Ratchet & Clank are now ready to go to the big screen this weekend for the very first time. It's a scary situation for the duo, knowing just how bad video game to film adaptations have been in the past.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Ratchet & Clank film is about to follow suit, that is, if the critics who've reviewed it are to be believed. The consensus among critics so far seems to be that the movie is too childish for anyone over a certain age to enjoy and too few new ideas warrant a trip to the theater to see the action unfold.

Based on 17 reviews received so far, Ratchet & Clank has a Metascore of 30 out of 100 on Metacritic.com. Here's what the critics are saying:

CineVue - 60 out of 100 - "Even with many of the original voice cast involved it's a tired effort that sadly - and it really is sad - doesn't live up to expectations."

ReelViews - 50 out of 100 - "The level of quality is such that this does not deserve a theatrical distribution and will only find appeal among pre-teen kids or those who have been fans of the games since their inception more than a decade ago."

Slant Magazine - 50 out of 100 - "The film crams in jokes long past the point of relevance and often to outright distraction, if not annoyance."

Time Out London - 40 out of 100 - "It’s not a total washout: at least one gag in five is actually funny, and the action scenes set an enjoyably breakneck pace. If you’re an 11-year-old on a week-long sugar jag, you might just love it."

TheWrap - 35 out of 100 - "Visually, Ratchet & Clank has its appeal.... But the story is ultimately too predictable and forgettable to make Ratchet & Clank anything but a kid-targeted holdover between slavishly awaited tentpole behemoths from the comic book world."

The New York Times - 20 out of 100 - "It has little story to tell and few ideas to offer. Just a great deal of product to sell."

indieWIRE - 0 out of 100 - "So profoundly bad that it represents the worst of two entirely different mediums, Ratchet & Clank doesn't blur the line between movies and videogames so much as it flushes them both in a toilet and forces us to watch as they swirl together down the drain."
