Marvel Bringing Runaways to Hulu

After several attempts to bring it to the big screen, Marvel have announced that they are developing Runaways for the US streaming service Hulu.

The comic book series was created by Brian K Vaughan, the genius behind Y: The Last Man and Saga, and artist Adrian Alphona, and featured a group of teenagers shocked to discover that their parents are all criminals and supervillains who hold a big meeting every year under the guise of a charity event. Stealing weapons, the group of six – who all have abilities inherited from their evil elders – strike out to battle their parents' misdemeanors and any other trouble that crops up.

Avengers: Age of Ultron writer/director and geek royalty Joss Wheadon also penned a few story arcs on the run.

There have been several attempts to bring the property to the big screen, with Iron Man 3’s Drew Pearce involved in a few drafts. Writing duties for the new series appear to have been handed over to Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, veterans of creating shows such as The O.C., Chuck and Gossip Girl, to develop the potential series.

Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb said: “We've known the Runaways' story would make great television and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie – who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience – write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable."

"I'm a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn't be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian’s characters to life," said Josh Schwartz.

Adds Stephanie Savage: "Josh and I can't wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu."
