At Japan Expo today, Naoki Yoshida - producer of Final Fantasy XIV - revealed the total number of paid subscribers during its 21 month life-cycle has reached 5 million. This is not an accurate current subscriber count, including any and all players who have paid the subscription fee at one point or another.

This number leaves Final Fantasy XIV as the second-most subscribed MMORPG behind the recently dwindling number of World of Warcraft subscribers which has hit 6.7 million. Currently, the number of World of Warcraft subscribers has hit the lowest point since the 2007 'Burning Crusade' expansion.

Since rebooting in 2013 as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the title has been considered one of the more compelling MMO's available at the moment. More recently, the game got a new expansion - Heavensward - which is now available.
