Creative Assembly Respond to Pre-Order DLC Criticism

Total War developer Creative Assembly has previously announced that their upcoming Warhammer-centric title will have some additional content locked behind a pre-order. In this case, Warhammer's favoured faction will not be included as standard and fans have not responded well.

Creative Assembly's reasoning behind the Chaos lockdown is that they couldn't make the faction how they wanted to within the main game's resources, "so we added it as a pre-order incentive that also gets sold on day one ... if we didn't add it to the pre-order, it would have been DLC later on and not in the game at release."

The response from fans has been negative, as expected, hitting the in-engine Chaos Warriors trailer with 40,000 dislikes and flooding forums with opinions. It does feel like Creative Assembly had Chaos written down as DLC from the get-go and the general consensus appears to be 'if it's finished before release, why not put it in the game?' considering Total War: Warhammer won't launch until April.

More recently, Total War Designer Rich Aldridge spoke to Eurogamer to talk about the title, stating "I think some people are always going to want to voice their opinion and be heard, and sadly that tends to be more negative than positive. [Chaos are] a very important race and they do feature in the game."

"What we’ve decided to do is that we’ve added additional content and then made them playable. We didn’t want to disappoint people. We actually thought by adding more content, that would make it an exciting pre-order proposition for them."
