Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell to star in Splash Remake

Earlier in June producer Brian Glazer let slip that he was still working on a remake of Splash, the 1984 fish out of water comedy starring a young Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, with a modern twist.

We now know that the twist will be Channing Tatum will take the role of the mermaid or merman in this case, alongside his 22 Jump Street co-star Jillian Bell, who reportedly developed the pitch that Disney are now  moving forward on

Grazer and Imagine partner Ron Howard (who directed the original) are on as producers, alongside Tatum’s own Free Association productions, with Marja-Lewis Ryan writing the script, which, like the original, will centre on a young child, saved by a mermaid, who reunites with the sea creature years later and falls in love – unaware of its identity.

It’s early doors but the gender swap idea does sound inventive enough to breathe life into a franchise 32 years-old and, with some luck, bring in a new audience too.
