John Hyams Directing New Maniac Cop

Executive Producer Nicolas Winding Refn let slip in 2012 that he would be overseeing either a remake or the next chapter in the Maniac Cop series – and now that film has a director.

Hymns, the man behind the recent Universal Soldier sequels Regeneration and Day Of Reckoning, will direct with a script by Ed Brubaker, confirmed Hymns himself at Fantastic Fest via Twitch.

For those not in the know, Maniac Cop was a slice of scuzzy slasher horror from genre maestro Larry Cohen. The 1988 original stared Bruce Campbell and the late, great Robert Z’Dar as the titular cop. While Z’Dar stuck around Campbell was replaced by Robert Davi for the sequel and then he himself was replaced by Jackie Earl Haley in the third instalment, Badge of Silence.

All three produced by Cohen and directed by William Lustig (with some co-directing assistance on the third from Joel Soisson).

The quest is now on to find someone who can replicate the schlocky thrills of Z’Dar’s performance.
