Ghost in the Shell, the long-delayed, controversial live action adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s original 1989 Anime, will go before cameras early 2016 according to star Scarlett Johannsson.

Doing the rounds for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Johannsson told Collider: “It’s happening. It will be shooting the beginning of next year, so I think we start production January or February and it’s me and Rupert [Sanders]; and that’s all I know.”

Rupert Sanders, director of Snow White and the Huntsman, will be working with producers producers Avi Arad and Steven Paul on the film that has already raised concerns with fans of the original Anime, which so far has spawn three manga editions, three films, a TV series and several video games.

Ghost sees Motoko Kusanagi (Johansson), a cyborg law enforcer and part of the member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission, which specialises in tackling technology-related crimes.

It’s a tough nut to crack but with Johannsson already a viable action star thanks to the stellar showing of Lucy which took $458 million worldwide it may prove to be a gamble worth taking.
