Howard: Next Major Elder Scrolls From Bethesda "A Very Long Way Off"
It's the "elephant in the room" when talking with Bethesda at major events, admits Todd Howard, but the studio has to be careful on the subject of The Elder Scrolls.
Many had hoped that Bethesda during their E3 2016 show would spring a fantasy RPG surprise with The Elder Scrolls VI, but no that didn't materialise. The closest we got was talk of more for The Elder Scrolls Online and a remastered The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
"...I think it’s good in these moments to tell our fans, ‘Yes, of course we are. It’s something we love.’ But it is–you know, I have to be careful what I say–it’s a very long way off," Howard told IGN.
He did tease that Bethesda Softworks has two other major projects in the pipeline before we'll get to hear about The Elder Scrolls VI, and it'll 'make sense' when we learn of them.
"...we actually have two other large projects we’re also doing that are bigger than anything we’ve done," continued Howard. “People will probably hear about those probably even before Elder Scrolls VI. And that’ll make sense many years from now."
“We think very long term. We’re not a developer that’s going to rush something like this out. When you think about what is the future of that kind of game, we have a pretty good idea of what that’s going to be, and it’s just going to take technology and time we don’t necessarily have right now.”
Sounds like Howard and his fellow developers have some big ideas for the next leap in The Elder Scrolls series. Fallout and The Elder Scrolls have directly benefited one another over the years in terms of tech advancements and new mechanics. Buildable settlements in the next Elder Scrolls? Will they also adopt voiced player characters too?
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition releases on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 October 28th, 2016. The PC version will be upgraded for free to the remastered version.
