Titanfall's Respawn Entertainment Developing Third-Person Star Wars Game

It turns out that Respawn Entertainment is working on a new third-person game set in the Star Wars universe. The Titanfall developer promises it will "pay respect" to its legacy.

This is a pleasant surprise as Electronic Arts currently hold rights to develop Star Wars titles in a deal with Disney. It wasn't exactly clear though who was getting to working with the IP set in a galaxy far, far away. BioWare and DICE obviously have Star Wars properties already in play. Now Respawn is set to join the club.

"The entire company erupted in cheers when it was announced that this would be our next endeavour," said Respawn's Stig Asmussen, an ex-God of War dev.

"But it's not all fun and games - we promise to pay respect to the Star Wars legacy at all times, a fact that will be constantly reinforced and honoured as a central game design tenet," he continued in the announcement.

"Fans should expect the exemplary level of quality first established at Respawn with Titanfall, a game that epitomises our studio's dedication to slick, larger-than-life action and fun, groundbreaking mechanics."

Other than it using the Star Wars universe as its canvas and being in third-person, nothing else is really known about the project, nor what platforms it'll launch on though PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are almost certain.

Currently Respawn is developing Titanfall 2 for PC and console with a "small, but incredibly talented team" now assembled to work on the Star Wars title.

EA does have another known Star Wars project in the works with Visceral Games, working with former Naughty Dog writer Amy Hennig. This is believed to be a sort of revival of the once promising Star Wars 1313 that was in development before it was cancelled. It was a third-person title where we played as a bounty hunter going to level 1313 on Coruscant.

There are also rumours that BioWare could be working on another Star Wars RPG, though this may have been referring to Star Wars: The Old Republic's more story-focused add-ons. It's doubtful we'll find out more of Respawn's Star Wars project this year as they seem to have just started.

Meanwhile fans of Respawn Entertainment's work have Titanfall 2 to keep an eye on, which is due its first gameplay trailer June 12th, two days before E3 2016 kicks off.
