Why There Will Be No "Launch Trailer" For Firewatch

Sean Vanaman, co-founder of Campo Santo, the developers behind the upcoming title, Firewatch, sat down with Brandon Jones & Kyle Bosman of GameTrailers.com on their talk show GT LIVE this past week, to bring out his immense enthusiasm for his game and answer several questions, including why you won't be seeing a traditional "Launch Trailer" for his game.

To explain, Sean described the development team's viewpoint on capturing their target audience. The team wanted gamers to realize that Firewatch is a tense mystery, not an indie art fling. To do that, it would be best to capture small pieces of the game that truly capture that feeling. Thus, this is why the game will be receiving four mini gameplay trailers as an alternative.

"We actually cut a launch trailer and we all went like - either too spoiler-y or too dull. That was a really bad place to be."

"So, the solution was let's make four," asked Kyle.

"Meanwhile, our friend Derek was cutting these 15 to 25 second mini trailers, that was like one uninterrupted moment of the game - like a goof or a sweet moment between Henry and Delilah, or something spooky." After a short break from being distracted by the beauty of his game, he continued, saying "And, we went, 'okay those are great.' I can watch these all day. It's really fun; it makes me like my own game. So, screw it, we're not doing a launch trailer, we're going to do these mini-trailers."

Firewatch launches February 9th on PC & PlayStation 4. You can watch one of those mini-trailers and the full GT LIVE interview below.
