What's happening with the new major Alien movie that was originally set for a 2017 chest-bursting release? Ridley Scott is what happened and his Prometheus prequels.

According to Sigourney Weaver herself, the star of the entire Alien franchise, the next Alien movie is still very much going to happen but Ridley Scott asked fellow director Neill Blomkamp to hold off on Alien 5 until Scott's Prometheus follow-up was done.

"Ridley asked Neill not to make our Alien til after Prometheus 2. He wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it's an amazing script, and Neill and I are really excited about doing it," Weaver said.

In fact she'd "be really surprised if we didn't do it, because it's such a great script, and we love working together. So, it's just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it'll be worth the wait." The actress made the revelation during a Q&A.

Michael Biehn is also set to return if the new Alien movie goes ahead and fans will remember him for his role as Corporal Hicks in Aliens (1986). Blomkamp meanwhile has teased some concept artworks for the project which remains in pre-production which includes Ripley, Hicks and some pulse rifle designs.

Ridley Scott  has titled his Prometheus sequel as Alien: Covenant, which is due out later in 2017, and obviously would cause a problem if that's when the 'official' next Alien movie was expected to drop too. Covenant will feature everything from both franchises, teases Scott, from eggs and facehuggers to "the big boy."
