Tetris Origins Film Planned by Director Brett Ratner

It’s one of those movies where the word ‘origins’ shouldn't induce bone-deep signs as you consider a trilogy of movies explaining stuff didn't need explaining – Tetris plans to tell the fascinating origin story for the maddeningly additive, hand-held gaming phenomenon through the eyes of its creator Alexey Pajitnov.

Brett Ratner and James Packer are now working on bringing a biopic of Pajitnov to the screen, who, designed the game while working in a Russian research and development centre.

Was Tetris owned by the Russian state, then? Well, the issue of its ownership has become a legendary tale, with Nintendo eventually winning the rights and bundling the game with its Nintendo Game Boy consoles. Without Tetris, there's a strong chance that the Game Boy wouldn't have been the success it was.

Pajitnov, meanwhile, didn't get a penny for his work until 1996, five years after Nintendo secured the rights.

There’s no release date in place yet but when all the blocks fall into place, we’ll let you know.
