Just in time for its 50th anniversary, Star Trek is to return to our television screens with writer/producer Alex Kurtzman developing the new show.

The Hollywood Reporter, who broke the story, says that Kurtzman, who co-wrote and served as producer of the reboot-via-time-travel film Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness, its less-than-well-received sequel, is currently looking for a writer for the show which will be produced by CBS.

Star Trek will debut on CBS January 2017, after which, the premiere and all subsequent episodes will then be available in the U.S. on CBS All Access, the network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service. Star Trek marks the first original series developed specifically for CBS All Access.

The new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

Progress has been slow on the new show, the first Star Trek television show in over a decade, due to rights disputes following the Viacom/CBS merger.

The Hollywood Reporter also says that "a formal announcement with additional details is expected to come later this morning."

Kurtzman is not involved in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, which many hope will represent a return to form for the franchise.
