The Hatton Garden diamond heist captured imaginations last year; it had everything, old school crims, a daring plan, a hefty haul and their eventual capture – it’s waiting for someone to tear the headlines from the papers and make a movie.

Well, it’s funny you should say that because there are now two movies in the works based on the robber’s exploits. The first one, currently being developed by Working Title – Bridget Jones’ Hard Time anyone? – but it now has competition in the form of the puntastic Diamond Geezers with Brian Cox and Tom Courtenay ready to drill their way through to the loot.

The pair are playing two of the older thieves who pulled off one of the most infamous heists in recent memory. A gang of old-school raiders looted vaults in London's Diamond Quarter and scored around £200 million in precious gems.

Ben Cookson is in the director's chair and is working on the script alongside Tony O'Leary and The Sting's Oscar winning scribe David S. Ward.  GSP studios are the front company for the heist…er…I mean are providing the backing, and the cameras should be rolling in January.

"For me, the most important element was putting together a prestigious cast that reflects the ambitious and audacious crime itself," says Cookson. "With Brian and Tom attached, we are assembling the calibre of cast I dreamed of and as a young director, I’m excited to make a film that resonates with an audience across the generations."
