Avengers: Infinity War Will Be Two 'Very Different' Movies

Everyone’s focus may have been on DC and the implications of their latest foray onto the big screen, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice but over at Marvel things seem to be as smooth as ever; and the news coming out of early reviews for Captain America: Civil War, just what the future holds for The Guardians of the Galaxy and not to mention the next two big superhero meet ups, The Avengers: Infinity Wars parts 1 and 2.

Already the early buzz has been overwhelmingly positive with fans lucky enough to catch early screenings of the film, taking to Twitter to praise the films incredibly action, it’s emotional stakes and, of course, Spider-Man but no thoughts turn to the next phase.

Civil War isn’t even in theatres yet and already directors Joe and Anthony Russo and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are chatting about their next collaboration for Marvel Studios: the two-part Avengers: Infinity War.

The conclusion of phase 3 will reportedly tie up every loose end in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far and bring together a reported sixty-plus characters to battle the evil Thanos, who has been looming over these movies for years. io9 have spoken with the Russos, Markus, and Feely about what to expect from the future of the MCU.

The most interesting soundbite of them all is Anthony Russo saying that both parts of Infinity War will feel like very different movies: “The movies are very very different from one another. It’s not a part one and part two scenario, necessarily. They’re just two different expressions. I think it creates a misconception th at we’re shooting them at the same time.“

For us there’s a through line from Winter Soldier, through Civil War, right to Infinity War. In our mind, the storytelling arc moves that way.”

The split could mean that we see two separate teams of Avengers battling with Thanos – perhaps the lesser-known heroes Doctor Strange, Black Panther and Ant-Man in one movie, and then the heavy-hitters Captain America, Iron Man and Thor in the second film.

Speaking of the movies development, Markus talked about working on the Infinity War script while on set for Civil War.

“We sent in literally 60 pages of unrelated ideas. Just like ‘Here’s some stuff that could happen in this insane movie.’ Then we came back from Atlanta and everyone had a copy of that [document] and they’d circle this, ‘This is cool, this is insane, this is cool, we’re not allowed to do that,’ and from there we’ve pieced it together very slowly. We’re in the middle of it now.”

Something else that’s cool is Chris Pratt’s performance in Guardians of the Galaxy – so cool in fact that the Russo Brothers look set to pinch Star-Lord for their own toy box - as well as the mighty Asgardian Thor. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Anthony said of the films: "The movies are intended to be a culmination of everything that's happened before in the MCU so you don't want to get into spoilers but I'm a big fan of what James Gunn has done."

[Joe Russo and I] are both big fans of what James Gunn has done. Star-Lord is a fantastic character and Chris Pratt is an awesome performer so you'd be very excited.”Joe then spoke about Chris Hemsworth’s Thor: "I'm excited to work with Thor. They're doing some really interesting stuff with Ragnarok and where he's gonna be at the beginning of Infinity War is gonna be a very interesting place and I think very profound. I think he's gonna have a real emotional motivation after that.”

Thor: Ragnarok will be directed by Taika Waititi, perhaps best known for 2014’s What We Do In The Shadows, and has recently cast Creed actress Tessa Thompson as the female lead – replacing Natalie Portman who will not return for the next instalment of the Thor saga.
