Rogue One: 16 New Photos and New Reshoot Details

This week has seen Entertainment Weekly break a series of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story exclusives including the news of Darth Vader’s imminent return. Following on from that we’ve had a series of exclusive images and news on just what those reshoots entail.

Within the 16 new images are dramatic shots of the new, imposing Deathtroopers storming a beach with the intent of breaking down rebel outposts, a closer look at Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a young woman recruited by the Rebellion to infiltrate the Empire and secure details of its latest weapon – a moon-sized battle station we know as the Death Star, and Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) – the man responsible for protecting the security of the Death Star project, but he's also a manipulator within the Empire (but judging on how well that security operation goes, it doesn’t seem like Krennic will be around for much longer).

Then there are characters that we haven’t really seen before such as Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen), a blind warrior monk who is not a Jedi but follows the path of the Force, and Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), Chirrut’s Force-doubting rough-and-tumble protector (I love the Kurosawa vibe we’re getting from these two characters), a security robot known as K-2SO (pronounced Kaytoo Esso and performed by motion capture and voiced by Alan Tudyk) Compare his gunmetal gray surface to the shimmering plating of "Goldenrod" C-3PO, and you'll see the difference between a utilitarian droid like Kaytoo and a protocol droid like Threepio. Kaytoo wasn't built to socialize. He's as brusque and blunt as he is strong, and the largely-unknown rebel fighter pilot called Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) – a terse, tense but capable flyer.

Not content with introducing the surrounding players, EW have also give us a few more details about the lead too. Confirming rumours, we now know that Jyn Erso’s father Galen (Mads Mikkelsen), is a scientist whose knowledge is being sought by both the Empire and the Rebellion but we also have Capt. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), a Rebel stalwart who anchors the loose cannon Jyn, and Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), the first animated Star Wars character to crossover into live action, a freedom fighter whose brutal tactics unsettle the Rebellion. During the character's arc on The Clone Wars, a younger Gerrera learned that change and victory often come with horrific sacrifices. What’s interesting with Saw is that his appearance has altered significantly from the first trailer – it could be part of the reshoots that have set the story leading into Rogue One’s release.

Perhaps the most intriguing photo of the lot is this one of a Deathtrooper holding what looks like a toy soldier modelled on a Stormtrooper. Didn’t we see an abandoned girl with her own toy modelled on a rebel fighter? What could the story link be?

Director Gareth Edwards has shed some light on what is true and false about the return to set for cast and crew:

“I mean it was always part of the plan to do reshoots. We always knew we were coming back somewhere to do stuff. We just didn’t know what it would be until we started sculpting the film in the edit,” he said. “There’s lots of little things that we have to get, but it’s all little things within the pre-existing footage,” he said.

One complication, he added, was that the cast is large, so individual shots with small groups of them add to the schedule.“Obviously, you’ve got to work around everyone’s schedule, and everyone’s on different films all over the world, and so it’s a bit of a logistical nightmare,” he said.

“That’s why I think it’s been blown out of proportion a little bit.”
