There's just something about having your people's cities tucked into the mountains, mining all those precious gems and minerals. Creative Assembly's latest developer walkthrough for Total War: WARHAMMER looks to the short, stout and bearded dwarf nation.

We've already taken a look at the human Empire's inner campaign workings but now the spotlight falls to the industrious and ever squabbling dwarfs. Before we even get to see the campaign in action, the overview map of all territory you've uncovered so far is enough to get any Warhammer fan salivating at all that juicy land to conquer and it plays well into the fantasy element.

As Creative Assembly are tackling such a huge IP that's swimming in riches of lore it shouldn't surprise the art direction for the game really stands out and has some of the most impressive sights of any Total War title to-date. The game itself functions in a very similar manner to all recent Total War entries but with the boon of magic and fantastical creatures swooping, stomping and scurrying.

What doesn't sound great about sending Grudge Throwers, Quarrellers, Thunderers, Longbeards and Hammerers to fight your enemies?

Much like Total War: ROME II, if you control a whole province then you get to apply some advantageous commandments. Creative also let us glimpse at the dwarven tech tree which follows "two core disciplines" which splits between civic and military; The Way of the Guilds and The Way of the Clans respectively. There are some nice new conveniences the team have implemented as well when building up settlements, like letting us have helpful tooltips on what else needs building before certain units can be recruited.

It says something about the civilization of a race when they have The Great Book of Grudges (Dammaz Kron) to keep tabs on all those who have crossed you since time immemorial. In Warhammer lore the dwarven tongue doesn't really have a word that directly translates to meaning 'forgiveness' as they prefer to nurture their grudges so they can enjoy tales later of how it was avenged. Come on now, who doesn't want their own Great Book of Grudges just handily lying about? It's an extra spin on things for the Dwarf campaigns.

Things are a lot more RPG too as Warhammer has some rather notable characters leading the charge and Total War: WARHAMMER is no different. There's an extensive skill tree for major characters that can really make the differences both in and out of battle. Quests tie into these which unlock additional and very powerful bonuses.

The Dwarfs Campaign Walkthrough is only a short 7 minutes long but worth its weight in gem-encrusted axes. It's a big deal for Total War and Warhammer fans alike as this marriage of franchises has been long sought after.

Total War: WARHAMMER releases on PC April 28th, 2016.
