The director of Shenmue, Yu Suzuki, spoke out about the third entry in the series and its gameplay mechanics yesterday to DualShockers.

Amongst other interesting tidbits, the development team is currently testing the Unreal Engine 4 and working on dynamic weather and lighting which will be "really beautiful ... compared to Shenmue II." It was the engine's portrayal of colour, its shaders, and the rendering engine which drove the development team to using the Unreal Engine 4.

During the interview, Suzuki visually demonstrated the AI Battling mechanic which was part of the 7 million dollar stretch goal. According to Suzuki, "It’s a system that will make the character respond intelligently to the commands given by the player during battle. With simple commands you’ll be able to execute complex techniques," and you can check out the visual demonstration below.

Combat will be more cinematic which "will look more like a movie" and the controls will be simpler than in the past.

In terms of an Xbox One edition, DualShockers asked whether or not there was any contact with Microsoft in the past year but Suzuki responded, "I’ll let you use your imagination on this one."

Shenmue III is expected to see release on PC and PlayStation 4 in December 2017.
