One of the main issues with Volkswagen’s passenger cars of the 1960s was that none had four doors. The 411 of 1968 changed all this; it managed to squeeze all the requisite doors onto a four-inch stretched wheelbase Beetle chassis but kept the faith with the rear-engined layout. However, at the front were MacPherson struts and disc brakes, meaning the 411 was a better-behaved machine than the Beetle. The 1679cc engine received fuel injection in 1969 and the gawky styling was reworked in 1972 for the 412. A 1795cc engine was adopted in 1973.
