The rear-engined Skoda 1000MB represented the beginning of a very dark period in Skoda’s history. It was considered a joke in the West but in its home land, the practical, reliable and easy-to-work-on 1000MB was a car with a waiting list. Of course, that was due to other factors, but what is easily forgotten is that the car, which was basically a reskinned Renault Dauphine, was cheap to buy, cheap to run, and motorised a generation of Czechs and Slovaks. The 1000MB was one of the cheapest new cars you could buy in the UK, and plenty of people did.
