Conceived for the short-lived Group B motor sport formula, the 959 was Porsche’s riposte to the Ferrari 288GTO. Unlike the boisterous but largely conventional Italian supercar, this was a technological tour-de-force with permanent four-wheel-drive and twin sequential turbos. This set-up went some way to eliminating the dreaded lag which typified forced-induction when the car was originally dreamed up in the early 1980s. Unusually – bizarrely even – the front tyres were larger than the rear items, with 80% of the drive going to the back wheels. All cars were made in left-hand-drive.
