Classic Car

Originally conceived as a replacement for the VW-Porsche 914, Porsche was commissioned to develop the 924 project, then bought the rights to it when VW changed tack. It uses an Audi engine with Porsche cylinder head, and the gearbox is in unit with the rear axle to provide near-perfect 53/47 weight distribution. Build quality is to the usual excellent Porsche standards, and the 924 was in instant sales success, quickly tripling the company’s factory output. Best ones to buy are from 1981-on as the whole bodies were hot-zinc-dipped to (successfully) keep rust at bay.
