Developed in conjunction with Volkswagen to replace the four-cylinder 912. The engine is borrowed from the VW 411, and being mid- rather than rear-mounted the 914 has excellent handling characteristics, aided by the all-independent suspension. Targa roof clips neatly out of the way to the underside of the bootlid when you want fresh air. From 1973 the 1700 is joined by a 2.0 version, and the following year the smaller engine capacity is raised to 1.8-litres. Low power and that VW connection haven’t helped popularity, but they outrank most water-cooled Porsches.
