Keen to retain a slightly more affordable car in the range after production of the 356 ended, Porsche installed a 90bhp version of that car’s four-cylinder engine in a 911 bodyshell, most fitted with the optional five-speed gearbox. That sounds potentially disappointing, but with light weight and better handling than the 911, this is a fine sports car in its own right. It briefly reappeared in 1975 as the 912E, fitted with a two-litre VW engine. Sold only in the US, this filled gap between the outgoing 914-4 and Porsche’s new 924. Prices are similar for either version.
