The ‘SL’ tag is supposed to translate as super-light, but despite aluminium doors, bonnet and bootlid, the 190SL is still too heavy to do anything properly sporting with its 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine. Settle for the fact that it is a good, if not exhilarating to drive, with bags of style. In fact it’s just the thing for those who can’t afford ten times the price for the larger 300SL. Build quality is superb, and they’ve survived in good enough numbers to make finding one simple enough. You may have to pay a bit more if it comes with both soft and hard tops.
