The starting point in Jaguar’s move into the compact sporting saloon market, even if from behind the wheel of an original 2.4 you’d be hard pushed to believe it, thanks to sluggish performance. Just like the D-type, the 2.4 featured unitary construction; the first roadgoing Jaguar to do so. The detuned, short-stroke 2.4-litre XK engine didn’t tax the independent suspension set-up too much, but with overdrive, it was a restful cruiser. All-disc brakes and automatic transmission were offered in 1957, but today, the 2.4 is still seen as the runt of the litter.
