When the 1973 energy crisis hit the USA, it hit hard. The Mustang wasn’t the only casualty, of course, but its downsizing was perhaps the most tragic, even the MkII it was perfectly judged for the market. It was based on the Pinto, so the most powerful versions could only muster 140bhp from 2.8-litres. The Mustang III of 1978 was an improvement in just about every area, finally abandoning its design connection with the original ‘60s car, adopting a new Euro-style sharp suit. Quicker models were turbocharged, and pushed out 200bhp for genuine performance.
