Jaguar took its XJ saloon to new heights with its new and exciting V12 engine from 1972. The Daimler variant revived a title which had last been used from 1926 to 1938, that of the Double Six. This created one of the better luxury cruisers of the era, a worthy rival for BMW, Mercedes-Benz and even Rolls-Royce, although build quality was often patchy. The 5342cc V12 engine may have been terribly thirsty, but it was also terribly fast and refined too. Vanden Plas versions had even more opulence, including better interiors and a vinyl roof.
